Two men — the writer and the photographer — travelled as a team to record life in many of the rural areas of the United States. They avoided the well-travelled freeways and highways upon which people drive from place to place, bypassing many of the more interesting areas off the beaten path. Instead they followed the less-travelled two-lane roads, visiting many small towns and rural areas that most people miss in there travels. During the Winter they left Washington, D.C. and travelled north through New Jersey to Connecticut, and on north, along a very meandering path, into Maine and into Canada, to travel west to cross back into upstate New York and travel south through New York State and Eastern Pennsylvania back to Washington. In the Spring they drove south from Washington, D.C. along the Atlantic Seaboard until in South Carolina they took a wide meander west and then south through Georgia into Florida, then west into Alabama. They meandered around Alabama and Mississippi, finally going west through Louisiana, ending up at Douglass, Texas, near the end of Spring. In Summer they continued slowly west across Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona into the San Joaquin valley of California. Then they drove north through California, western Oregon, Washington to Seattle, where they took a ferry to Alaska. In the Autumn they drove leisurly east from Idaho to Washington, D.C., passing through Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and Virginia. The writing is excellent, and you are probably already aware of the outstanding and beautiful National Geographic photography. |
